Sybil (Character)

Sybil the beautiful witch. Of course her name was not really Sybil, it was Anita. In the fall of 1968 she enrolled in astrology classes at the Polytechnic State University, in San Luis Obispo, California.

Sybil was born to one of the town doctors in Morro Bay which is just up the road from San Luis Obispo on the coast. Growing up in a fishing community she became interested in the stars and moon, because her older brother was learning navigation for his coast guard license on a local fishing boat. In her childhood she learned many of the constellations and the phases of the moon. She was riveted when Apollo 11 landed on the moon that summer of 1969, and felt she wanted to be the first female astronaut.

As she became and adult that summer she felt she was looking at science as a career and hoping someday to get a job working with telescopes to watch the heavens. And in her quest that summer during school break in 1969 she went to Arizona to work at the national observatory on Kit Peak as and aide. The observatory was on the Tohono O'odham Indian reservation.

While employed that summer she met a man who professed to understand how the stars and moon were enter-woven with the occult. In short he said he could speak to the hereafter and heard voices from beyond. His name was Hermes, and invited Anita to join him and others at his rented home in the hills of the reservation. He lived at and old U.S. Army Calvary fort. That weekend before Anita drove out to the fort she had a strong desire to be renamed; (had Hermes already placed a spell on her) she picked the name Sybil from Teen Beat magazine, jumped in her Volkswagen bus and headed out.

After several weeks of going to the fort, she quit her job at the observatory and moved in at the fort. She was locked into a step of seance and gloom. The fort was so forlorn a minister from the reservation's church came out once a week to ensure everyone involved was alright. The other residents were retired people from Tucson, hoping that Hermes could provide to them a door to their past and see beyond the voices.

Sybil was on her way to the fort when her VW bus broke down, and Jim Bronson magically appeared to help her. During the three days he touched her life Sybil gradually became Anita again. And as a few more weeks past she returned to Morro Bay, her family and back to San Luis Obispo enrolling to continue with her courses in Astronomy.

Crowley the cat. At the fort there was a barn, and all barns have a family of cats. The black one was Sybil's favorite; she named him after a fisherman her brother had worked for. Old man Crowley kept a black cat on his fishing boat for good luck. Crowley returned with Anita to California and lived out his life with her.

Hermes (Character)

Archer Lennwood, known to his associates as Archie. Archie was a con man having grown up in Detroit. With his sinus problems and allergies he moved to Phoenix in 1964 and worked the land hustle scams of the early 1960's. With a rap sheet as long as his ideas for con, he had to find a new trade. The occult was right up his alley, with his creepy looks he fit right in. He called himself Hermes, picked from a cheap bottle of after shave cologne.

He rented a house on the Indian reservation, so the local police could not just show up when they pleased, this gave him a sense of protection and dominance. With his smooth talk and ghostly mood he would befriend retired women and sometimes men around Tucson with the thought that he could help them in their loneliness of having lost their loved ones. He briefly touched Sybil's life and actually helped her find herself when she was lost.

Hermes was eventually arrested on the reservation by the Indian police when a woman he was having a seance with had a stroke and died at the fort. Rumor has it he moved to Mexico after he was released.
